NIcaragua's Best Surf Breaks

Nicaragua has been blessed with world class waves.  Up until the last ten years Nicaragua was mostly unknown as a destination for surfers.  Times have changed.  Nicaragua is now on most surfers’ bucket list of surfing destinations.  Beaches on the southern coast have been blessed with year round off shore winds resulting in excellent waves down the coastline.  We could have easily compiled a list much longer but here is our top 5.

The Top 5 Surf Breaks

1)      Popoyo

2)      San Diego

3)      Colorado

4)      Puerto Sandino

5)      Aposentillo

Popoyo is arguably the most consistent wave in Nicaragua.  The size of the waves can depend on the swell but if it is just right it results in monster waves further out on the Outer Reef.  The Outer Reef has been compared to the likes of Pipeline.  It is definitely for the expert surfer and not for the faint of heart.  The faces to these waves reach up to 20 feet.  The water is shallow, and if you were to fall off the wave it can be disastrous.  Just ask all those who have needed to be rushed to the hospital for stitches.  Do not worry though the waves that break closer to the shore are for all levels of surfing.  If you are looking for the ultimate surf experience, book a week at the Popoyo Surf Lodge.  It is run by JJ and Kim Yemma.  No one knows the Nicaraguan coastline better than JJ.  He has catered to many professional surfers that have come to Nicaragua including CJ Hobgood, Damien Hobgood and Andy Irons.  He will make sure you get several sessions of surf in everyday to all the great spots in the area.  They even have a boat available to get to the places that are not accessible by land.

An hour drive from Managua is San Diego.  San Diego is located next to the Gran Pacifica beach resort.  You do not need to stay at the Gran Pacifica Beach and Golf Resort to surf San Diego.  You can park your vehicle in the community nearby and take a 5 minute walk down the beach where you find San Diego.  The break has a rocky bottom which helps create steep, beautiful barreling waves but can be painful if you fall off at the wrong place.  It can be a little unnerving to surf because you can see the rocky bottom just a few feet below your board as you are riding the wave.

Located inside the Hacienda Iguana Golf and Beach Resort is Colorado beach break.  If you do not own property or renting property, the only way to access these waves is by boat.  If you are looking to get barreled on your surf trip to Nicaragua then you must do whatever it takes to get to surf Colorado.  Barrels go left and right.  You have the option of taking off in the direction you feel most comfortable.  If you do have the extra cash, it may be beneficial for you to rent a place to stay there.  You will then have waves right outside your doorstep and still be able to surf the other breaks in the area.

Puerto Sandino is on the northern coast line a couple hours outside of Managua or a short drive from León.  The exact spot for this wave is best to use a boat to access because it is a little further out and it has one of the longest lefts you will ride forever.  Rides can go as longs 400 meters down the coast.  That is another reason why it is best to have a boat to take you back to the lineup.  There is many other beaches close by if you do not have a boat to use.

Last on our list of best surf breaks in Nicaragua is Aposentillo.  It is the furthest away from Managua but they do have the least amount of crowds in the lineup.  It is probably the least surfed of the top 5 list.  There are waves for all skill levels.  A good starting point is from the Punta Aposentillo hotel.  From there you can find surf breaks really close by including The Boom, a really hollow, consistent wave.  It is located a ten minute walk from the hotel.
